A Week Volunteering With Amazon CARES - Part 3/3

For two weeks this past October, Liz volunteered in Peru during one of our volunteer veterinary trips. In this special three part blog series, Liz describes her first week volunteering for Amazon CARES. To learn about upcoming volunteer veterinary trips, visit our website at

The final day of neutering in Caballococha was on a Friday.
We were woken up by the local school band playing and marching the street outside – practice for the later parade I think, and as we walked out of town we could see all the stages and decorations being set up.  It was really sad thinking that we were not going to be back there!

The surgeries were a little more steady, although I don't for a minute think we had neutered most of the animals.  The day seemed to be a public holiday in the town – we had had assistants from the biology classes.  Even the school janitors seemed keen to leave and Harri had to climb over the wall to get to the autoclave.

The town celebrations coincided with Hen's birthday, so we had to complete the trip with a few beers – it would have been rude not to.   We spent the evening in the square listening to the talent show final.

The following day was back to Iquitos in the boat – ready for a day off and the next week!  The highlight of the day – I finally got to see my pink dolphin!
