At the time Amazon CARES was founded, the concept of adopting a pet was foreign to the people of Iquitos. Finding safe, secure, and loving homes for our rescued dogs and cats was a constant challenge.
All potential adopters are screened, must fill out an application, and pay a nominal fee. Their new pet is already spayed or neutered, and the adopter is provided with a collar, leash, ID tag (all considered luxuries in the region), and a bag of dog food. These adopters become "VIP clients" of our attached veterinary clinic and receive 20% off future services.
Employees and volunteers remain in contact with our adopted pets and their families. Home visits are a normal part of our adoption follow-up procedures. Nothing can replace the happiness we feel seeing a dog that may have otherwise suffered a needless death on the streets of Iquitos living in an affectionate home. That look of hope in the eyes of the dog and happiness he brings to the family make our work meaningful.
