About Amazon CARES

Amazon CARES was founded in 2004.  At first Amazon CARES was met with resistance, as responsible pet ownership and animal adoption were novel concepts for the region. Over the last eleven years Amazon CARES has helped to shape the local culture, encouraging compassion towards animals.

We now offer a variety of programs promoting animal health and welfare, public health, and environmental protection. Amazon CARES has a modern veterinary clinic in Iquitos, offering affordable veterinary care to members of the community. In addition, Amazon CARES has the region’s only no-kill animal shelter.

Amazon CARES has received international recognition as an innovative charity based in the US and operating in the Peruvian Amazon region.  The Amazon CARES blog features information about Veterinary trips to Peru, animal and human welfare issues, featured charities and much more.

Studies show a strong link between animal and community health. We saw this with our own eyes, and created essential programs that benefit the community as a whole. The world is focused on the important global and environmental issues facing the Amazon Rain forest region. Naturalists, biologists, environmentalists and wandering souls visit Iquitos in droves. Sadly, this region had NO programs in place for DOMESTIC animal welfare.

This is the reason that Amazon Community Animal Rescue, Education & Safety exists.  Citizens with a desire to protect countless stray animals stepped in to create programs that the government did not provide. Since 2004, CARES has made amazing progress in the promotion of animal and public health.
