A Letter From Peru Director Bruno Antoine

Iquitos animals have found a spokesperson, and humbly, in their names, we would like to thank you for your support.

As an animal protection organization, each year we have ups and downs. We make alliances and partnerships, such as, with a few more conscious than others Municipalities, Universities, the Lawyer Association of Loreto, while some allies from yesterday forget their commitments to our institution. It is also difficult to maintain the interest of our volunteers who, despite sharing our passion for animals, often demotivate. The economic situation is certainly cause for concern, needs and expenses related to social activities and rescues are very strong.

Luckily an angel always appears in the moments that we find a desperate situation. And despite these disadvantages that every association may have, we will not lose sight of how lucky we are to partake of this beautiful work and the goal to which we serve: achieve concrete victories for animals.

The 2013, like every year, has given us satisfactions, sadness and promises for the future. Without claiming to be comprehensive, we mention some important facts that marked this year, starting with the tragic loss of our dear friend and colleague Gustavo Cahuaza, in February. His memory will forever remain in us and those who knew him. The shelter will officially have his name during a commemoration ceremony that we will organize soon in Cabo López.

As for the good news and achievements of 2013, we can highlight four successful veterinary campaigns around the Loreto region, allowing us to neuter and spay 669 dogs and cats, and provide treatments to more than 2,237 animals, activities that would not have been possible without the decisive support of the Brigitte Bardot Foundation for the fifth consecutive year. In total, adding these figures to other specific actions and social care at the clinic, more than 2,556 animals have been benefited. Also, we have given 31 lectures, 29 press notes published in local newspapers, and 39 interviews.

Another point that full fill us with joy is the record of adoptions obtained in 2013, 119 animals adopted.

In December, we acquired a scooter van that will have more than one function. It will allow us to facilitate rescues, transportation will be simpler and less costly to our clinic and the shelter, not to mention the ability to take the volunteers to where campaigns take place. Earlier this month a new module was built in the shelter, dream came true thanks to the donation of the Fondation 30 Millions d'amis, over a year after the heavy flooding which significantly affected our facilities.

To start a new year is an opportunity to leave behind what does not work and has not yielded the expected results. It is an opportunity to innovate, to recharge forces and to establish new goals, such as an expanded shelter will allow us to provide more services, and the VET MOVIL will help us to offer our delivery services in a more efficient way.

Sometimes it may look that for every victory achieved by the CARES team, for the rights and dignity of animals, other tests that we must fight appear, and also other fronts to cover. However, it is evident the fertility of the seed that we sow with our daily work and with your continued support. For your selfless commitment and expectations put on us, you nourish us, and encourage us not to give up and to move on, particularly insisting in education and promotion of standards laws.

Our cause and the support we receive, has no boundaries and no species. Each one is valuable in the trenches of your choice, both individual initiatives, sponsorships, such as targeted support that each of you seeks to serve the common good, allowing CARES fulfill its mission.

On this last day of the first month of 2014, I can only, in the name of the brave team of CARES, wish you a happy new year and thank you again for believing in us and our ability to alleviate animal suffering, building a world every day more fair and respectful to life.

Best regards,

Bruno Antoine
