The Sad Reality...for Owned Pets

The sad fact of many dogs in poor areas ... in this case, not a street dog.  He has an owner that does not take care of him.  We heard about him and brought him to the Amazon CARES Veterinary clinic to receive first aid and his first group of shots.  Sadly, his owner has missed subsequent appointments.

  1. Until we change the way people think about animals, we will not change animals who live like this. So the question is, how do we reach out to people who act in ways that we find morally offensive? It's not an easy thing to do.

    1. Thank you so much for reading our blog. This is a tragic and common ocurrence. Amazon CARES attempts to break the cycle through our intense humane education programs which are conducted in schools every day, and our weekily television show "El Mundo Invisible."

  2. omg, this makes me sick. Why? Sally, why don't they put the pet up for adoption? I understand that everyone has a right to have a pet - but only if you can afford it and care for it properly. This breaks my heart.

    1. Amazon CARES is one of the more visible charities in Iquitos, yet due to lack of acess to basic communications (such as newspapers, internet, and tv), much of the population remain in the dark about our services. Despite offering free services to low income families, people are busy working and/or do not have transportation to reach our clinic. Sadly, our staff is too small to travel to clients, unless we are working on a specific campaign with volunteer veterinarians. Thanks for commenting.
