CARES in Jeopardy due to Record High Floods

Iquitos is suffering the ravages of the highest river water levels in the past 25 years.



Amazon CARES has mobilized volunteers in Iquitos, Peru.  As the water crept closer toward our no-kill shelter, we began to heavily promote adoptions.

Crowded Conditions for Animals

Every single shelter animal was saved!  In the absence of dry land, 50+ animals were forced to live together in a crowded building.  Luckily, adoption figures for April have reached a record high of 18, alleviating some of the crowded conditions.


It is very heartbreaking to watch the total loss of our beautiful animal sanctuary, which we have added on to and fortified over many years.

Twelve animals have been adopted during April 2012.  This is a record!  Thank you to these wonderful people that are adopting dogs and helping to alleviate the overcrowding in our flooded shelter!

I was thrilled to appear on Pets Teach us So Much Radio with Everett and Everett last evening.  It is the first time I have really discussed the flooding at our no-kill shelter in depth.  Of course, Robbin and Joe were great interviewers and listeners.  You can replay the podcast here.  My appearance on the show is in the last 20 minutes.

 As flooding continues in Cabo Lopez, the situation is becoming more precarious. The water has swept away nearly everything in its path, including agricultural farms and poultry farms.  This is adversely affecting the economy of the families in this sector.
"Unfortunately, we are in a critical situation.  The water is threatening the entire community.   Families that live here are leaving their homes and possessions, some of which have almost completely disappeared under the waters of the river Itaya," explains Bruno Antoine, Peru Director of Amazon CARES.
