Flood Destroys Animal Shelter; Volunteer Trip Cancelled

With great sadness we report the forced cancellation of the April/May Veterinary Volunteer trip to the Amazon, which we were conducting in conjunction with the Worldwide Veterinary Service. *

This is the worst flooding in 13 years.  Our shelter
 is destroyed.

Flooding has destroyed our animal shelter, and we have relocated all animals to a space below our jungle treatment center.

Small, large, healthy and infirm dogs are living together.

Here one can see the many dogs eating below the treatment building at the Amazon CARES property that houses the no-kill animal refuge. There is a lot of dust.  Small, large, healthy and sick dogs are confined to this small area. It is a difficult space to clean. The animals are confined and stressed out. And continued flooding remains a threat.

Dogs are packed into a crowded, but dry, space.

Our volunteer housing has also been impacted.  We hope there will be no permanent damage to the volunteer housing, but we expect the structure to be fine, as it is built on stilts.

Road access to our property is flooded.
As one can see, the road to the shelter is flooded.  We can only access the shelter by boat.  We have removed our generator, which provided a few hours of electricity per day.  One can see electricity poles, recently installed.  We had hoped to have electricity within a few short months.

Moving the generator to safety.
We have chosen to build a smaller structure on the highest part of the property.  The current shelter can not be salvaged.

We are grateful to the FundaciĆ³n 30 Millions d'amis (30 Million Friends) of France for granting us 4000 Euros to assist.  Other generous donors include Laura Bennett of Embrace Pet Insurance, Donna Bodkin, CARES' Blogger Linda Schwefel, Erin Parks, and Heather Mansfield of Nonprofit Tech 2.0.
