A Peruvian Vet's Experience with CARES

Written by Claudia Ríos

I was a Peruvian volunteer during the Amazon CARES spay/neuter campaign in August 2011. Despite being Peruvian, my trip to Iquitos was an eye-opener to the reality of conditions that most animals endure.

I was able to visit some communities that have much difficulty in obtaining veterinary care and where help from the government is a rarity.

A Shocking Wordless Wednesday

Soccer fans in Chile lose control over ticket sales and take out their frustration on dogs.

Sights like these were common in Iquitos, Peru when Amazon Community Animal Rescue, Education and Safety (Amazon CARES) began in 2004.  We are proud to have helped pass legislation against animal abuse.  Through education we have helped create a more sensitive environment towards animals.

How to Fundraise via a "Wish" at

If you are active on Facebook, perhaps you have seen invitations to participate in a fundraising campaign through the application.  A common and often successful manner of raising funds for one's cause is by donating your Birthday or making a Holiday Wish.

Anyone, with or without a Facebook profile, can donate to your cause.  Your causes will receive a check once per month from the fundraising partner Network for Good.

To start a "wish" on, visit the site and go to the bottom of the page where there will be a text link "wishes."

"Causes Wish is the fun and social way to raise money for your favorite cause. Use the events of your life—like a birthday, wedding, or a 10k run—to make a difference."

You can choose to establish a "wish" for an existing cause or create your own cause.

To see an example of two fundraising wishes in the works currently that benefit Amazon Community Animal Rescue, Education and Safety (CARES), please check out the following two wishes.

Molly Mednikow's Holiday Wish
Manuela's Birthday Wish

These wishes are integrated with Facebook so that you can share the event with your Facebook friends.  You can also email your friends about your wish!

Amazon CARES would like to share this knowledge with others in the hopes that you can continue to support your favorite causes!  If you are an Amazon CARES supporter, consider donating your Birthday wish to CARES!
