Washington Humane Society - The Washington Humane Society is the only Congressionally-chartered animal welfare agency in the United States. It is the only shelter in Washington DC, providing comfort and care to nearly 30,000 animals each year in its programs including sheltering, adoption, spay and neuter, CatNiPP, Humane Law Enforcement, lost and found, human-animal therapy programs and Humane Education. Heavily involved in animal welfare policies and legislation, in 2001 the WHS successfully lobbied for the creation of a law that makes cruelty to animals a felony. One of its innovative programs is Dog Tags, a cooperative venture with the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Wounded soldiers recovering at the Center are taught the basics of dog training, with a certificate-based curriculum that affords the opportunity for future careers in animal training, care and welfare. Their charges are homeless animals, who are trained and socialized, greatly increasing the likelihood of successful adoption.
A wonderful advisor, friend and supporter of Amazon CARES, Anissa Grossman, is also a Board Member for the WHS. Thank you Anissa, for all the work you do on behalf of animals.
Washington Humane Society has a very professional, well-written blog as well as a very popular Facebook account, with almost 2,500 friends.
